Sandia Spring Roll

What a start to an action-packed weekend for our Knockouts!!

The South Texas Knockouts competed in a two-day event in Albuquerque, NM, over the weekend. The level 3 team played three bouts, against Albuquerque Narwhals, Los Alamos Cherry Bombs, and 509 Killer Bees, and the level 2 team participated in a mashup.

If you’re new to derby lingo, a mashup is a game where players are picked for their team by drawing names, sort of like a lottery or pulling names from a hat. The skaters don’t know until teams are set which team they’re on or even if they know any of the other skaters. It’s a great exercise in sportsmanship and communication, and it creates connections with other skaters all over the globe, which strengthens the sport as a whole.

Check out the photo reel below for a glimpse at the action-packed adventure our kids had in the Sandia Mountains!!

Over the weekend, our Knockouts traveled to New Mexico to play a tournament against some heavy hitters from the lower Rocky Mountains and the Sandia Mountains. Our kids practiced hard for weeks, played their best, and are showing up at school today as total roller derby heroes!!

Our level 3 travel team played three sanctioned games, against the Albuquerque Narwhals, the Los Alamos Cherry Bombs, and the 509 Killer Bees. Our level 2 team battled it out in a mashup with players from all over the region.

Mashup games are kind of like picking teams out of a hat. You don’t know what team you’re on or who you’re skating with until a couple of days before the event, and it’s a great way to promote team effort and camaraderie across the sport, not just within your home team.

Lots of friends and memories were made over the weekend, as well as several hard battles fought on the track!!

Happy Birthday KW Killa!

Big Happy Birthday to our travel team’s own heavy hitter, KW Killa! Anytime derby offers a dare, she says “watch this” and buries it under the track. We hope your birthday is as awesome as you are!!!
